JK composes incidental music and performs it on the recorded soundtrack for the show. John also sets tunes for the songs and rehearses them with the cast, a core professional company enhanced by a large group of community and child actors. |

| FOLK MUSIC DEGREE JK is visiting fellow, guest lecturer and teacher for a week on the Newcastle upon Tyne Folk Music Degree Course. |

| PASSING NOTES JK is one of the team of professional folkies invited to be a mentor for a year, on this scheme organised by Roger Watson and Chris Jaeger, of Huntingdon Hall in Worcester. John’s student is the singer and melodeon player Paul Scourfield. A couple of days’ workshops are followed up by occasional days of tutoring, ending in a final concert at the Hall which included a few numbers by John and Paul together. |

| FANFARE FOR THE SOUTH WEST JK is commissioned by Folk South West to arrange a selection of traditional songs and some original melodies composed by Gina Le Faux into one continuous piece of music lasting about thirty minutes. Initially The Fanfare was the core piece worked on by students at the Folk South West Easter School, with a premier performance at the end of the school. The project continued in 2003. |

| INTERNATIONAL CONCERTINA ASSOCIATION At the AGM it was proposed, carried unanimously, and therefore decreed that Honorary Life Membership of the Association be awarded to John Kirkpatrick for his outstanding contribution to the preservation, promotion, and development of The Concertina. |

| A PLACE CALLED ENGLAND BBC Radio 3 JK is amongst a huge number of English folkies performing and discussing Traditional English Folk Music in a special programme taking over Radio 3 for a whole evening. This extravaganza, which lasted four and a half hours, was hosted by Fiona Talkington and produced by David Corser for Monty Funk Productions Ltd. |

| FANFARE FOR THE SOUTH WEST Continuing the project which started in 2002, the next step in this epic undertaking involved recording the work for a CD, with JK producing as well as playing extensively himself, and drawing on the resources of The Stanchester Quire and a large cast of professional folkies. Then there was a public performance by festival guests and a massive number of workshop participants at Sidmouth Folk Festival, which John conducted, and a smaller company at the festival at Hambridge, conducted by Eddie Upton, with John leading the band. |

| EFDSS GOLD BADGE At Sidmouth Folk Festival, during the concert performance of “Fanfare For The South West”, John was presented with The Gold Badge of the EFDSS. It is the highest honour the Society can bestow, reserved for those who are felt to have made an outstanding contribution to Traditional English Folk Music. The citation was written and read by Eddie Upton, and the badge was presented by Mike Wilson Jones. |

| BRISTOL SCHOOLS JK undertakes a series of concerts for the pupils of Primary Schools in Bristol, along with fellow musician Paul Burgess, to try out the idea of stimulating creative writing through music and song. |

| A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM By William Shakespeare, directed by Nigel Bryant at Marlborough College, Wiltshire. As musical director JK sets the songs to music, devises choreography for numerous dances, and arranges his incidental music for performance by the college students. |

| JOHN KIRKPATRICK’S ENGLISH CHOICE Dave Mallinson – known to one and all as “Mally” – asks John to compile a volume of 101 traditional English dance tunes, to be part of his “Mally.com” series of individual selections by well known instrumentalists. The book contains the melodies, both in the key preferred by John and in the original key if that’s different, chords, some notes on the tunes, a few photos, and a lengthy introduction. You can also hear John sitting playing the tunes through on his various squeezeboxes on two companion CDs released by Mally – “Orlando’s Return” and “Garrick’s Delight” – where John is joined on two thirds of the tunes by his son Benji on guitar, bouzouki, or banjo. |

| THE FIRST STEPS JK and fellow morris dancer Janet May compile a book containing about half the repertoire of The Shropshire Bedlams and Martha Rhoden’s Tuppenny Dish. Published by the teams, the book gives their history and development, with detailed notation of the dances and tunes. |

| SWEET WAS THOSE NOTES The Songs of Somerset - ITV West This was a three part television series, made by Available Light TV for ITV West and presented by Eliza Carthy, discussing and portraying the traditional songs and singers of Somerset. JK appears in one episode which covered the making and recording of “Fanfare for the South West” from 2003. John discusses how on earth you arrange music and song in this context, and is seen supervising the recording process. |

| A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE The Drama & Theatre Arts Department, Staffordshire University. JK is musical director, coaxing vocal performances out of the third year degree students who put together this documentary play on the theme of ‘diversity’. Directed by Chris Martin. |

| BRISTOL PRIMARY SCHOOLS JK undertakes another tour of short concerts in Primary Schools around Bristol, along with Paul Burgess. The idea is to stimulate ideas for creative writing by the children. This year the theme is Highwaymen and Outlaws. |

| YERMA The play by Federico Garcia Lorca, directed by Nigel Bryant at Marlborough College, Wiltshire. As musical director, JK re-writes the songs in the text, translated from the original Spanish, in the style of Traditional English Folk Song, and devises stylised movement and ritual in this production by the college students. |

| DISTANT SHORES JK contributes to the soundtrack in Nick Bicat’s music for this TV series starring Peter Davidson. |
